What is a test shoot?
Whether it be a new model looking for agency representation or an existing model building out their portfolio, a test shoot allows a photographer and model to come together to collaborate and create content. As there is no client the creative direction can come from the photographer, model or talent agency. Typically simple in execution, a test shoot provides a low-pressure way for models to gain experience and for photographers to experiment, without the need for an elaborate production. During a test shoot, it's often just the photographer, model, and sometimes a makeup artist or hairstylist working together to create the look.
How do I prepare?
These shoots are easy to prepare for, they're low stress and don't require loads of planning. Before each shoot we'll discuss some wardrobe ideas. I have a mood board with great suggestions that aims to use pieces from the model's own closet - an expensive wardrobe isn't needed for great shots! Once we decide on a concept and outfits, we're ready to shoot.
What about makeup and hair?
Test shoots generally highlight natural beauty. Use minimal makeup - concealer, mascara, well-groomed brows, and lipstick are sufficient. Opt for natural-looking eyeshadows. Blemishes are normal and can be subtly retouched. Keep hair looking natural - blow it out straight or style curls, you know what works. Present an enhanced version of your true self. Neutral nail polish like beige is recommended. If the concept calls for something you don’t feel you can handle yourself you can always add a hair & makeup artist during the booking process.
What should bring for wardrobe?
I know you must be feeling excited and a bit nervous. These are perfectly normal emotions before a big shoot. To help calm those pre-shoot jitters, I have a key tip: Pack everything two days early.
I can't emphasize enough how crucial this is. Making a packing list will streamline all your future shoots too. Lay out your makeup, wardrobe options, shoes, accessories - anything you may need. This gives you time to go shopping if you're missing something that would complete an outfit. For example, a black turtleneck and jeans could become an elevated look with the right belt or graphic blazer. Extra pieces like a funky earring can give a beauty look a whole new vibe. Having options prevents last-minute stress.
Giving yourself time means you can run errands smoothly, avoid forgetting anything, and feel fully prepared come shoot day. The only thing left to decide is your coffee or tea order.
Pro Tip: Leave the tags on your items just in case we don’t end up using them. This way you can return what we don’t use rather than spending money on pieces you won’t want to keep.
